Update on Spring and Summer Club Activities

- No single club meeting this month –

We thought we had a planned event for September, but it fell through for now. Because of that I am going to list some things members of the club are doing this month with a contact. If you think you are interested, just give that member contact a call for more info and join them for a day or weekend of fun.

- Weekend cruise to Frankenmuth Auto Fest on Sept 10-12 -

A bunch of members are going for a drive. Not that we don’t drive, but short of HRPT this is going somewhere. Frankenmuth is a town in Michigan that has a weekend festival once a year that centers around people and their rides. There is food, crafts, antiques, and of course the cars that those people arrived in. If you are interested please contact Andy Marchiando for more info.

- The Hot Rod Barn Open House and Custom Car show on Sept 25th –

Andy and Wes will be at this show, sort of as a club event. It is from 10am-4pm at The Hot Rod Barn in Morris Il. The exact address is 6245 N. Seneca Rd. That is exit 105 off of I-80. The phone is 815-941-9551. You can get more info on the show at www.thehotrodbarn.com . Food and beverages available. Winners to be in The Hot Rod Barn 2011 calender.

- Lake Geneva Classic Car Event –

This show happens year after year. We have had member go before and I am pretty sure the Joe & Carol Wirth will be attend this one in Saturday. Check out www.GenevaLakeClassicCar.com for more details.

- August meeting recap -

On Saturday August 14th about 30 members of the NICC attended the annual picnic that was held this year at the home of Mark & Cheryl Witczak. It was a beautiful, but very warm day, so we planned the picnic so we could be in and out of the house all day. That way people could cool off as often as needed.
Typical picnic food from burgers to brats, corn to chips, potato salads to sweets were all available along with all the soda, tea, lemonade or water anyone could drink. We had lunch from about 1:30 to almost 3. Food took a little longer to make because I had two cookers, but only one tank of propane.
The ladies congregated on the deck and in the kitchen, while the guys spent the afternoon in the garage, living room, or in the back yard.
After about 4:30 we started doing a quickie clean up and put things in the house so we could get ready to head off to the Dog & Suds in Ingleside for some desert and to watch the 18 piece swing band that would be playing there starting at 6:30. It was hot but desert went down so nice, and then it was time to settle in and listen to the band.
I lot of people stayed only a little a while, but Cheryl and I stayed until about 8pm, because the band was great. They could play things to keep people interested and the singers had good voices, so it was actually worth staying to sit and enjoy the evening. I hope everyone had a good time.

- July meeting recap -

On Saturday July 24th about 20 members of the NICC had a meeting at the Sonic in Montgomery. Weather was hot and overcast, but the weather held until later that evening. We were there to celebrate Marty Liebrock’s 50th birthday. The manager of the Sonic was very good to us. She gave us a group discount and held a raffle for a gift card. The gift card was won by a former member Jim Williams, who joined us with is 70’ Chevelle SS which he has owned since it was brand new. I had not seen Jim since the late 90’s and he was surprised when I was able to tell him about the convention he attended with his car in Schaumburg. Hard to believe it was at least 13 years ago.
From Sonic, we cruised to Marty and Debbie’s new home. All I have to say is Marty has found the dream garage. You could easily get 6 or 8 cars in there, and with lifts a few more. The ceiling is at least 14 feet high.
We all had some birthday cake and wished Marty a happy birthday, and unfortunately the weather looked threatening, so Cheryl and I had to go. I really wanted to see the house and the pool, but I did not want to get caught in a hail storm.

Once again we would like to thank Marty and Debbie for inviting us to their home. Maybe next time it will be for a pool party.

- NICC Racing at Byron Wrap Up -

A couple of NICC members did not let the heat bother them and raced at Byron on July 17th. I was HOT, but Joe Wirth and Paul Mueller braved the heat to get in 6 runs during the day. Joe says that if it was not so hot you could have gotten 15-20 passes in that day. Paul’s best was a 12.55 @ 107 MPH, while Joe’s best was 13.11 @ 103 MPH. Joe had his son Joe there for support, while Paul had his wife Kim and his sons, Ryan and Mike, there to cheer him on. Other members that went to the track to watch were Wes Fritch, and Ron and Steve Pogue from Rockford.

- Freeport Cruise night update –

By Mark Witczak

On Saturday July 31st twelve members of the NICC set out on a mission. We were going to go to Freeport Cruise Night 2010. Some of us had gone before and just had to go again. Weather was mostly clear and about 80 degrees. It was just perfect weather for crusing.  We met at a Culvers west of Rockford on US 20 so we could group together and get our reserved spaces cards for the lot once we hit Freeport. There was Jim & Jill Karg, Bob & Rae Barta and their grandson, and Mark and Cheryl Witczak, Ronnie & Debbie Pogue, Dennis & Connie Grondin and Floyd Drinkwine. Floyd was a passenger of the Pogue’s as he blew the head gasket on the El Camino and it is not rebuilt yet.

From the Culver’s it was off to down town Freeport. The club had bought ten reserved parking spaces, so we knew we could not arrive late, but 5pm would be a great time to get there. We got into town and went right to the west lot. We parked in our spaces and left the end of the row for everyone to set up a chair and watch the cars cruise on by.

Cruise night officially started at 7pm, so we had time to go get a bite to eat and look around at all the different things happening in town. A number of the members had ribs and corn sold by one of the local churches. Fresh roasted corn for a $1. How can you beat it? For desert some people hit the “Diary Mart” for really good ice cream, while others had the largest elephant ears and funnel cakes I have ever seen.

After dinner, some people went to watch the burn out contest. We could smell the good ones at our spaces and we were pretty far away. The $200 prize was won by a stock Dodge Dakota pickup.

Then at 7pm it was back to our chairs to watch the cruise begin. This year it started off a little slow, but by 7:30 there was a steady line of cars for the next 2 ½ hours. I know that I enjoyed watching all the different cars go by. There is a big sampling of vehicles, from people daily drivers, to a purple semi, Model A’s, to muscle cars, and everything in between.

At 10pm it was time to head on back home. Cheryl and I got home around 11:40. The Chevelle runs great at 65-70 mph and I love driving it when the roads are new like most of the roads to Freeport. Hope to see you all join us next year. I know for sure that I am going, and I think I will not be alone.
